PSHE EDucaTion at Harrow school
Welcome to the Harrow School Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education platform.
PSHE Education is vital to 21st-century schooling, and Harrow is committed to the highest quality of teaching and learning in this subject.
PSHE Education became mandatory in September 2020, with all schools required to teach pupils topics in Relations and Sex Education (RSE), and in Health Education.
Harrow teaches an enhanced version of the PSHE curriculum, including further topics such as economic wellbeing, careers and learning skills.
Through this website, parents can access resources from PSHE Education lessons at Harrow so that they can understand the topics being taught, how they are taught, and empower them parents to 'Continue the Conversation' at home during the school holidays, where appropriate.

Wellbeing and Mental Health
Mental health is an integral and essential component of health. The WHO constitution states: 'Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.' An important implication of this definition is that mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.
Good mental health allows an individual to cope with the normal stresses of life, to work productively and make a contribution to his or her community.
Mental health and wellbeing is an important part of the PSHE curriculum at Harrow. Boys are encouraged to destigmatise mental health issues, learn how support others and build their own resilience.
Mental Health
Key to Harrow's approach to mental health is the idea that 'we all have mental health', and we need to look after this health in the same way that we do our physical health.
Peer Support
Harrow boys are taught about the importance of connecting with others, and the positive impact a support network can have for all those involved.
Every September, boys participate in a Living Together Conference at which they explore this idea more fully.
You can read advice on connecting with others here.
The Mind Field Podcast
This podcast was created by OHs Kyri and Alexi Pittalis (Rendalls 2006, 2007).
Dive in to explore a variety of topics around mental health.
wellbeing
Boys are given ideas about how to boost and protect their own mental health: sleep, hobbies, exercise, friends, family and more are discussed as coping strategies.
Importantly, boys are also encouraged to find what works for them.
Wellbeing and Social Media
Social media adds a whole new dimension to wellbeing and mental health. The links between anxiety and social media consumption are becoming much clearer.
Boys at Harrow are taught to be critical of what they see on social media, and to limit their intake. These ideas are explored in this video.
Relationships and sex education (rse)
RSE is a cornerstone of Harrow's PSHE Education programme. The aim of our lessons in RSE is to give boys the information they need to develop healthy relationships of all kinds.
Boys begin by learning about respectful relationships and how to prevent and counter bullying, and they work towards discussing the important concept of consent, intimate relationships, sexual health and the law on sex and relationships.
These can be some of the most difficult conversations to have with your sons. Take a look at these resources to understand how these vital topics are explored in lessons.
Consent
Vital to all boys' understanding of RSE is the formal definition of consent: "he/she agrees by choice, and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice".
In this video, the Head Master discusses this vital topic with Dr Bailey.
Contraception
Boys learn about contraception in PSHE Education lessons. This video contains an outline of the topics covered.
Sexual images
Boys learn very important lessons regarding the law around sharing of nude or semi-nude photographs (sometimes known as sexting). Click here to read more on this topic.
Boys also learn about pornography, and how it shows unrealistic depictions of sex that lead consumers to feel less satisfied with themselves and their partner. Click here for more information on this topic.
Bullying
Harrow takes bullying very seriously, and all incidents of bullying are reported to the Deputy Head Master.
Boys are taught about the School's stance on bullying and its processes for dealing with bullying. You can view this guidance by clicking here. (My School Portal login required).
Boys are taught about the need to be 'upstanders': to challenge bullying whenever it is safe to do so and always to report bullying.
Boys in the Shell watch this video about standing up to bullying.
Physical Health
"If exercise could be packaged in a pill, it would be the single most widely prescribed and beneficial medicine in the nation.” – Dr Robert Butler
Boys at Harrow are fortunate that regular exercise is built into their weekly routine. There are, however, many other important aspects to physical health which are covered in PSHE lessons at Harrow.
Explore the resources below to see what boys learn in PSHE Education lessons on this topic.

revising for exams
Effective use of revision time is key for boys when tackling mocks, Trials and public examinations.

All boys take part in careers-focused lessons each year too, complementing the work of the Careers Department.
Budgeting and student finance
In the Sixth Form, boys receive lessons on personal finance including budgeting, payslips, taxes and the intricacies of student finance.

The teenage brain is more prone to risk-taking and impulsivity. Boys are shown this video, which explains this phenomenon and the its consequences.
In a similar vein, all Lower Sixth boys hear from Justyn Larcombe, who gambled away everything.
Careers
Boys at Harrow are guided towards possible future careers through the work of the Careers Department.
Boys are encouraged to pursue a career following the principles of 'Ikigai': ideally one finds work that one loves, that is needed by the world, that one is good at, and for which one can be paid for.
